Autumn Mornings in Takachiho: From the Sea of Clouds at Kunimigaoka to the Waters of Takachiho Gorge
Takachiho experiences chilly temperatures before dawn. When there are 2 to 3 consecutive clear days with a temperature difference of over 15 degrees between morning/evening and daytime, and no wind in the morning, conditions are ideal for a sea of clouds to form below Kunimigaoka. Typically, the sea of clouds appears from late September through early December each year. In the morning, visitors wait on the hilltop to see the sea of clouds or sunrise, and as the sun rises higher, they move on to the Takachiho Gorge walking trails and boat rentals, then in the afternoon, walk from Ama-no-Iwato Shrine to Amano Yasugawara. This itinerary connects three key spots in Takachiho Town.
Kunimigaoka (Oshikata, Takachiho Town)
This hill stands at an elevation of 513 meters and offers panoramic views stretching to the five peaks of Aso and the Sobo mountain range. It is also the birthplace of the folk song “Seicho Kariboki Uta.”

The appearance of the sea of clouds depends on natural conditions and may not appear every morning. Even on mornings without the sea of clouds, visitors can still see mist rising from the mountains, according to the Takachiho Tourism Association.

Takachiho Gorge (Mitaigoshioi, Takachiho Town)
The gorge was formed when pyroclastic flows from Aso’s volcanic activity cooled and hardened, then were eroded by the river. The cliffs reach up to 100 meters in height, averaging 80 meters, and stretch approximately 7 kilometers east to west. In 1934, it was designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument under the name “Gokase River Gorge.”

There is about a 1-kilometer walking trail featuring the three bridges of Takachiho, Oni Hachi’s Power Stone, and the Sen’nin no Byobu Rock, known for its columnar jointing. Manai Falls plunges approximately 17 meters into the water and is listed among Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls. Note that from June 22, 2025, a part of the walking trail is closed, with detours in place. This closure will continue for the foreseeable future (updated July 29, 2025). Maps of the closed sections are available in the announcements (PDF).
Boat Rentals
The cost is per boat for 30 minutes and fluctuates by day (available on the Tourism Association’s rate calendar). Exceeding 30 minutes incurs an additional 1,000 yen per 10-minute increment. Boats operate from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, with last rentals accepted by 4:30 PM. Online reservations open at 9 AM two weeks prior to the boating date and close at 9 AM two days before; reservations require advance payment by credit card. Reservations by phone or email are not accepted. Same-day tickets are sold in the morning at the first Oshiol parking lot reception. In November, the reservation system is fully enforced on both weekdays and weekends, and no same-day tickets are issued if online reservations are sold out. For example, reservations for November 3 to 5 were already fully booked as of November 3.
Operations pause during river flooding, scheduled inspections in January, April, July, and October, and after earthquakes of seismic intensity 3 or higher in Takachiho Town. The boats were closed on October 25 and 26 due to an approaching typhoon. Operational status is updated every morning around 8 AM on the Tourism Association’s website.
- Admission: Free. Toilets available
- Parking: 1st Oshiol 1,000 yen / 2nd Araragi 1,000 yen / 3rd Ohashi 800 yen / 4th Oshikata 500 yen (first 60 minutes free after entry for 3rd and 4th). Paid parking fees apply from 8 AM to 5 PM; nighttime parking is free. Vehicles wider than 2 meters or longer than 5 meters are not permitted in paid lots. Ama-no-Iwato Shrine West Main Shrine and Amano Yasugawara (Iwato, Takachiho Town)
This shrine enshrines Ama-terasu Omikami’s legendary cave retreat, Ama-no-Iwato (the cave), as its sacred object. The sacred object can be worshipped from the West Main Shrine. Guided tours by shrine priests depart at scheduled times, lasting 10 to 15 minutes and are free of charge. Visitors gather at the rest area before the start time. Tour times are posted on the shrine grounds map page; if there are no participants at the scheduled time, the tour will be skipped. The gift shop and office are open from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.
Ama-no-Iwato Shrine West Main Shrine Listing Page
The East Main Shrine is about a 10-minute walk across the river from the West Shrine. Amano Yasugawara, a large cave where the myriad gods gathered for consultation, is about a 10-minute walk along the Iwato River. Also known as Gyobo-ga-Iwaya, it originally had only a shrine, but visitors began stacking stones here as prayers, creating countless stone piles today.
Access to Amano Yasugawara is only by foot. Due to stairs, it is not accessible for wheelchairs or strollers. The path has slippery sections and no lighting, so visitors should walk during daylight hours. There are no toilets at the riverbank. Cars should be parked in the shrine parking lots, and visitors return via the same approach path.

Daily Itinerary Suggestions
Because the sea of clouds depends on the weather, on mornings when it does not appear, visitors might consider heading down to the gorge early. Both Kunimigaoka and Ama-no-Iwato Shrine are about a 15-minute drive from Takachiho Bus Center. If you plan to rent a boat, make reservations online from two weeks before your desired date. In November, same-day tickets are not issued for fully booked days. Since Amano Yasugawara has no lighting, plan to visit there early in the afternoon while it is still bright.
Takachiho Town is located about an hour’s drive from Yamato Tsujunbashi IC and about 7 minutes from Hinokage Fukakado IC. From Kumamoto Station, a limited express bus takes about 3 hours, and from Nobeoka Station, a local bus takes about 1 hour 30 minutes.
