Arimura Lava Observation Deck

Located in Arimura Town, Kagoshima City, the Arimura Lava Observation Deck offers a viewpoint where visitors can experience the powerful presence of the volcano while viewing the dynamic silhouette of Sakurajima’s southern side up close. The observation deck is situated on the Taisho lava field, formed by a past eruption, providing a free and open space accessible to all.

The site features a walking path that weaves through rugged, dark lava rocks. As visitors progress along the trail, the scenery changes, revealing a contrast between the massive rocks underfoot and the lush greenery growing vigorously in the gaps. This setting reflects the unique landscape born from living in harmony with volcanic activity, allowing an up-close observation of the earth’s natural forces while feeling the breeze.

The observation deck is notably close to Minamidake, offering a dramatic view of the mountain’s rough slopes rising right in front of the visitors. On clear days, the black lava field and the peak’s silhouette stand out sharply against the blue sky, attracting those who come to capture the scene with cameras. Despite the frequent arrival of tourist buses and private vehicles, pausing along the walkway provides a moment of quiet to confront the overwhelming presence of the volcano.

Conveniently accessible from main roads around the island, the Arimura Lava Observation Deck is a common stop for those exploring Sakurajima. Stepping down from a vehicle leads to expansive views of the layered lava formations, with the imposing Minamidake mountain rising beyond, creating a striking and robust landscape.
