Atago Shrine (Moto Atago)
About this place
Atago Shrine (Moto Atago) is located at the foot of the mountains in Kameoka, Kyoto, beyond the rural landscape of Chitose Town. This ancient shrine is said to be the original site of the many Atago Shrines found throughout Japan. The shrine grounds are surrounded by lush greenery and clear air, providing a quiet setting well away from the noise of daily life.
The sanctuary retains a simple beauty, with large, time-worn trees and a stone torii gate displaying a weathered character. The shrine buildings blend naturally into their surroundings, presenting an unadorned and dignified atmosphere typical of an old shrine. Because the area is not overly developed as a tourist site, the landscape maintains a harmonious relationship with the natural environment.
The approach to the shrine passes under the torii and through the wooded area, allowing visitors to observe the changing seasonal landscape up close. It is common for people to combine visits to the shrine with walks in the nearby Satoyama countryside, experiencing the play of light filtering through the trees and the cool mountain breezes along the way.
