Chijiwa Observatory
About this place
Chijiwa Observatory is located at the entrance to the Chijiwa district in Unzen City, Nagasaki Prefecture. Situated along the road leading to the Shimabara Peninsula, it offers an unobstructed panoramic view of Tachibana Bay and the gently curved sandy beach of Chijiwa Coast. The observatory overlooks a landscape where lush green mountains meet the sea.
From the viewing area, visitors can feel the breeze coming off the sparkling blue waters of Tachibana Bay. On clear days, it is possible to see a sweeping combination of the sea, the sandy shore, and the towering mountains of Unzen behind them. The appearance of the coastline and surrounding mountains changes with the time of day and season, offering a dynamic natural scene.
Positioned on the route toward Unzen and Shimabara, the observatory serves as a rest stop where people can pause during their drive to take in the scenery. On weekends, visitors often stop to enjoy the view and photograph the landscape. The location provides a chance to observe the contrast between the calm sea and the beach below, as well as the shifting patterns of light and color over time.
