Chiran Samurai Residence Gardens

The Chiran Samurai Residence Gardens are located in a quiet area of Chiran Town in Minami-Kyushu City, surrounded by gently rolling mountains. This area features streets lined with neatly trimmed hedges and stone walls that retain the atmosphere of the Edo period. Upon entering, visitors encounter well-maintained green spaces arranged with care.

The group of gardens along the street has been designated a national scenic site. Each garden, once part of samurai residences, has its own distinct design. Some incorporate views of the surrounding mountains as a backdrop, while others express aesthetic principles through dry landscape rock gardens within limited spaces. Seasonal trees and flowers add color to the stone walls.

Visitors can walk along streets bordered by artisanally crafted stone walls and trimmed hedges, observe the remaining samurai-era residential sites, and take in the varying garden scenery. Mornings tend to be quieter, with sounds of birdsong and the wind accompanying those strolling through the area.
