About this place
Daikyokan Jigoku is a site located in the Unzen Onsen area where the powerful presence of geothermal activity can be observed up close. White steam rises thickly from the ground, occasionally obscuring the view, while the sound of erupting steam resembles a loud cry, which is said to be the origin of the site’s name. The air is filled with the scent of sulfur, and the ground reveals white rocky surfaces from which intense heat and steam are forcefully emitted.
Visitors follow a walking route designed to make use of the natural terrain, which includes slopes and stairs, so wearing comfortable shoes such as sneakers is suitable. The maintained trail allows for safe observation of the dynamic scenery of high-temperature hot springs and plumes of steam at a distance. During times when morning mist swirls, the interplay of light changes, creating an atmospheric effect.
The background changes with the seasons: in periods of fresh greenery or autumn foliage, the colorful trees contrast vividly with the white steam. The sounds of the vigorous steam and the distinctive smell can be experienced directly near the feet along the path. Surrounded by rising heat and resonating sounds, visitors walk along the trail as part of their exploration.
