Former Takatori Residence
About this place
The Former Takatori Residence is a historic example of modern Japanese-style architecture located in the Kitashironai area of Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture. Originally the home of Takatori Iko, a former coal mine owner, the residence is now recognized as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The site reflects the historical atmosphere of the castle town that once developed around Karatsu Castle, featuring a combination of traditional Japanese design alongside modern Western influences throughout its spaces.
A notable feature of the residence is the large main hall, which contains an authentic Noh stage hidden beneath removable tatami mats. This carefully constructed stage illustrates the cultural activities of the time. Skilled craftsmanship is evident throughout the building, from intricate transom panels to decorative details that enhance the architectural design. The residence also includes gardens that exhibit changing appearances with each season.
Visitors can explore the spacious structure where Japanese and Western aesthetics merge, appreciating the detailed woodwork and fittings crafted by artisans of the period as they move through the rooms.
