Goryokaku Tower

Goryokaku Tower is a landmark frequently visited by travelers exploring the city of Hakodate who seek a view from above. From its observation deck, visitors can see the large star-shaped fort that is otherwise difficult to grasp from the ground. This fort is a well-known historical site, and its unique shape is clearly visible from the tower.

The panoramic view changes with the seasons, presenting different scenes throughout the year. In spring, the moat is lined with pale pink cherry blossoms forming a star shape. Summer brings bright green foliage, while autumn colors the star with vivid reds and yellows. In winter, the fortress is covered in pure white snow, standing out against the crisp air. On clear days, the view extends to Hakodate Mountain and the Tsugaru Strait, offering a broad and open landscape.

Inside the tower’s observation floor, there is more than just scenery. A display area provides educational information about the history of Goryokaku, including miniature models that illustrate the site’s past. The exhibits detail the turbulent history of the area during the late Edo period, tracing the footsteps of historical figures from that time. This combination of historical context and wide-ranging views allows visitors to see both the past and present of Hakodate.
