Ishidake Observatory
About this place
Ishidake Observatory is located at the summit of Mount Ishidake in Funakoshi, Sasebo City, at an elevation of 191 meters. It is known as a filming location featured in the opening scenes of the movie “The Last Samurai.” The observatory offers unobstructed 360-degree views of the Kujukushima Islands, where numerous green islands float on the blue sea. The scenery changes with the season, time of day, and weather, attracting visitors who often bring cameras to capture the views.
The path leading up to the observatory is lined with dense trees, creating an environment filled with the sounds of wind and birdsong. Visitors walk through the wooded area, taking time to listen to the natural surroundings or recall scenes from the film while observing the shifting shadows over the islands. The space serves as a place for walking and quiet observation amid nature.
