Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine

Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine is located at the foot of a mountain covered in deep green foliage in the eastern part of Aso, Takamori Town. The approach to the shrine is lined with moss-covered stone lanterns, arranged neatly along a gently sloping and well-defined path. Tall cedar trees overhead filter light onto the stone pavement below, creating varying scenes depending on the weather—brighter moss after rain and a misty atmosphere in the early morning. Visitors walk along this quiet, wooded path, surrounded by a calm atmosphere distinct from nearby town life.

At the top of the slope stands the shrine itself, set in a tranquil environment. Beyond the main shrine building, a mountain path continues uphill, where the roots of trees grip the slope. A prominent natural feature here is a large rock formation with a hollowed-out arch, through which light and views pass, illustrating the force of the surrounding natural landscape. The path through the rich greenery and the sight of this dramatic rock formation reflect the area’s natural environment and the historic significance of the shrine.
