Sightseeing
Keya no Ooto
About this place
Keya no Ooto is known as one of Japan’s largest columnar basalt formations. Located at the northwest tip of Itoshima City in Fukuoka Prefecture, this coastal site features rock surfaces with a honeycomb-like appearance shaped by the erosive forces of the rough waves of the Genkai Sea.
The location offers dynamic views accessible from both the sea and the land. On days with suitable weather and calm waves, sightseeing boats operate, allowing visitors to view the entrance of the sea cave from the water. On land, a trail surrounded by greenery leads to an observation platform offering a wide view of the sea.
Many people visit the walking path to the boat dock and the observation platform. The shadows cast on the rock surface change with the angle of the sun, giving the rocks a different appearance throughout the day. When the waves are calm, it is possible to look up at the interior of the cave from the boat.
Visitors can be seen positioning their cameras or looking out at the sea, engaging with the scenery in various ways.
