Kunimigaoka

Kunimigaoka is a vantage point located on a high hilltop in Oshikata, Takachiho Town, Miyazaki Prefecture. From this elevated position, visitors can take in sweeping views of the surrounding landscape, including the tiered rice paddies and the deeply incised Takachiho Gorge. Looking down, the rice paddies form intricate patterns across the hillsides, while beyond them the rugged valley of the gorge extends into the distance.

One notable natural phenomenon visible from Kunimigaoka is the sea of clouds that sometimes fills the valley below under certain weather conditions. When mist and morning fog settle in, the valley appears as if covered by a blanket of clouds, with the nearby mountains seeming to float above this cloud sea. The appearance of the scenery changes with the time of day and weather, offering different views depending on the conditions. During daylight hours, visitors can observe the shapes and textures of the terraced fields and gorge under a clear blue sky, while in the early morning quiet, travelers are often seen watching the cloud formations spread across the valley floor.
