Kurokami torii
About this place
The Kurokami Torii is the remaining part of a shrine gate located in Kurokami Town, Kagoshima City, buried largely underground by the heavy ash and pumice from the major volcanic eruption in 1914. Once standing along the path to a local shrine, only the top sections such as the kasagi (capstone) and nuki (horizontal lintel) are visible above ground today. The structure, originally several meters tall, remains partially buried, preserving the scene as it was after the eruption and illustrating the scale of the disaster.
This site has been intentionally left undisturbed as a historical record, rather than excavated, to convey the power of the volcanic event and to maintain the memory of the natural forces at work. Information panels on site provide detailed explanations about the history and impact of the eruption. The surrounding quiet area, shaded by trees, offers a calm atmosphere that reflects the passage of time and the area’s historical depth.
Visitors observe the torii gate’s exposed upper parts in a setting that suggests the long cooperation between the local environment and its people. Situated along a walking route through eastern Sakurajima, the site serves as a point of reference for understanding the region’s volcanic history while showing traces of the eruption that have resisted weathering.
