Raizan Sennyoji Daihiouin
About this place
Raizan Sennyoji Daihiouin is a Buddhist temple nestled in the quiet mountains of Itoshima City, Fukuoka Prefecture. Visitors come to spend time surrounded by rich nature and historical architecture, enjoying the calm atmosphere among the seasonal changes of the trees. The temple grounds feature a garden centered around a large maple tree estimated to be about 400 years old, designated as a natural monument of Fukuoka Prefecture. This tree displays vivid colors in autumn and fresh greenery in spring and summer. There is also a garden with a heart-shaped pond and numerous stone statues arranged quietly throughout the area.
Inside the Kannon Hall, a wooden statue of the Eleven-Faced Thousand-Armed Thousand-Eyed Kannon, approximately 4.6 meters tall and recognized as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, is enshrined. During guided tours, visitors can listen to sutra chanting by a monk and receive detailed explanations about the temple’s history. The tour also allows close viewing of the large Kannon statue, as well as access to the colorful murals in the founding hall and the many Rakan statues scattered through the temple. Walking through the temple, one can observe the historical statues and paintings quietly and attentively.
