Sakurai Shrine

Sakurai Shrine is located in the northern part of the Itoshima area, in Shima Sakurai. The shrine grounds are filled with the clear, cool air and the sound of birdsong, offering a quiet atmosphere away from the noise of the outside. Visitors proceed slowly along a tree-lined approach where sunlight filters through the leaves, and surrounding trees block out outside distractions, creating a solemn silence.

The main hall and tower gate, both built in a sturdy style, stand quietly within the shrine’s grounds, which are surrounded by lush forest. These structures are connected to the history of the Kuroda clan and were established in the early Edo period by Kuroda Tadayuki, the second lord of the Fukuoka clan. Both the main hall and tower gate are designated cultural properties of the prefecture, reflecting architectural beauty developed over many years and conveying a sense of the shrine’s formality.

The shrine also has a historical connection with Sakurai Futamigaura, a scenic spot known for its “Wedded Rocks,” which once belonged to the shrine’s territory. By visiting both along the coast, one can trace the historical links of the area. The forest surrounding the shrine changes throughout the seasons, displaying vibrant fresh greenery in spring and colorful autumn leaves, showing the natural beauty of each season.

In the early morning hours, the air is particularly clear, and quiet visitors come and go as they spend time facing the shrine buildings.
