Seibu Forest Road

Seibu Forest Road is located on the western side of Yakushima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture. It is the only route on the island that passes through the World Natural Heritage site and is accessible by car. The road connects the Kurio and Nagata districts and is a narrow, single-lane path that runs through dense evergreen broadleaf forests.

Along the road, it is common to see wild Yakushima macaques and deer appearing on or near the roadway. The animals often show little fear of humans, with scenes such as macaque families grooming in the middle of the road or deer quietly observing from the trees. Visitors traveling by car can watch these animals from a distance while passing through their natural habitat.

The road has several features to be mindful of, including animals frequently sitting on the road, requiring slow driving speeds. The narrow width makes passing other vehicles challenging, especially near curves. For safety and nature conservation, the road is closed from evening until morning.

Because this area preserves a rich natural environment, visitors are expected to maintain appropriate distances from wildlife. Feeding or approaching animals closely, or making loud noises to scare them, is prohibited to protect the ecosystem. Drivers are advised to wait calmly when animals block the roadway.

Under a canopy of green leaves that filters sunlight, the road is dappled with gentle light and carries the scent of the forest along with the sounds of birdsong drifting into vehicles. The experience is one of slow and quiet travel, moving in rhythm with the deep greenery of Yakushima’s forest.
