Tsūjun Bridge

Tsūjun Bridge, located in Nagahara, Yamato Town, Kamimashiki District, Kumamoto Prefecture, is a large stone arch aqueduct built in 1854 to supply water to the Shiraito Plateau. This historical structure represents the advanced civil engineering and ingenuity of the late Edo period. Constructed with multiple layers of solid stone, the bridge was designed specifically to transport water to an area that faced water shortages.

The bridge’s arched silhouette stands out against the blue sky and surrounding greenery, presenting a strong visual presence even from a distance. Originally built to carry water, its form combines practical function with aesthetic qualities, showing different appearances depending on the viewing angle. Close inspection reveals meticulous craftsmanship in the tightly fitted stonework.
