Yudomari Onsen

Yudomari Onsen is an outdoor hot spring located along the southern coastline of Yakushima, set close to rocky cliffs where waves break and scatter fine spray. The site is open to the sea breeze, with minimal barriers, allowing an unobstructed view of the East China Sea’s blue waters stretching to the horizon. The sound of waves continually rising and falling can be heard clearly, emphasizing the remote island setting.

The onsen is built on a rocky shore and provides a natural, open-air bathing experience accessible 24 hours. Bathers sit in tubs where their eye level aligns closely with the sea surface, creating a sensation of merging with the ocean. The water is a mild alkaline simple hot spring, known for its smooth and gentle texture which is said to help relieve nerve pain from daily life or travel, soothe muscle soreness after hiking or long trips, and warm the body from the core.

The view of the East China Sea changes with the time of day, presenting various scenes throughout the day. In daylight, the vibrant blue sea and sky stand out sharply. At sunset, the water surface gradually shifts from reddish to purple hues, forming a gradient along the horizon. At night, the minimal artificial light allows for clear views of countless stars overhead, providing a quiet setting for nighttime bathing.

Visitors come from both on and off the island, bathing at different times and following simple local rules regarding swimwear and changing spaces. The onsen area maintains a calm atmosphere as people quietly share the natural surroundings, often sitting late into the night listening to the gentle sound of waves and feeling light sea spray.
