About this place

Atago Shrine, located near the summit of Mount Atago west of Kyoto, is the head shrine for all Atago shrines across Japan. Revered as the guardian against fire, it holds a special place in the hearts of many, with its protective talismans commonly displayed in kitchens throughout Kyoto. The shrine’s serene grounds, surrounded by lush trees and far from the city’s noise, offer a peaceful and reverent atmosphere. Reaching the shrine involves a rewarding hike up over 900 meters, through nature and stone steps, where visitors exchange warm greetings that encourage continued ascent. The journey provides a chance to connect deeply with nature and oneself, culminating in a tranquil and uplifting experience at the historic shrine, set against the backdrop of beautiful seasonal scenery.
