Nichinan Coast (Oni no Sentakuita)
About this place
Along the coast of Aoshima in Miyazaki City, where the deep blue Pacific Ocean stretches endlessly, you’ll find an extraordinary natural spectacle known as the “Oni no Sentakuita” or “Devil’s Washboard.” This fascinating formation of unique rock ridges is carved rhythmically by the waves, creating a striking landscape that is a signature sight of the Nichinan Coast. Visiting at low tide reveals the rugged stone surface protruding above the water, offering a breathtaking and dynamic scene.
Formed over countless years by the interplay of waves and sandstone, this rare geological feature is designated as a national natural monument. When the tide recedes, you can walk right atop the rocks, peering into tide pools below where small crabs and fish can be spotted. For safe exploration, it’s best to wear shoes with good grip that can handle getting wet.
The scenery here changes with the time of day. Under the bright midday sun, the vivid blue sea contrasts beautifully with the white spray of waves and the endless rock formations. As the sun sets, the rocks take on a warm orange glow, casting long shadows that create a magical atmosphere. Feel the sea breeze on your skin and savor the peaceful passage of time as you hunt for your perfect photo angle along this incredible stretch of coastline.
