Senpiro no Taki Falls
About this place
Located in the southeast part of Yakushima, the Mugi area is home to some of the island’s most striking natural landscapes, and among them, Senpiro Falls stands out as a powerful symbol of Yakushima’s abundant water and dynamic geology. This impressive waterfall cascades down a massive granite rock face across a drop of about 60 meters, carving its way through a jagged gorge and offering visitors a vivid experience of nature’s relentless force.
To fully appreciate the breathtaking view, a specially built observation deck faces south, allowing for a panoramic sight of the entire waterfall. From this vantage point, the striking contrast between the lush greenery, the white spray of water, and the exposed giant granite rock creates a scene of stunning beauty. The gorge’s appearance changes with the seasons, weather, and time of day, making every visit unique and unforgettable.
Strolling around the area, you can marvel at the enormous granite slab said to be as large as a thousand outstretched hands, forming the dramatic backdrop of the falls. The climate in Mugi is warm, but the cool mist from the waterfall and the refreshing breeze that sweeps through the gorge bring a soothing relief that enhances the peaceful atmosphere. Senpiro Falls is truly a place where the rich natural environment of Yakushima can be admired in all its grandeur.
