About this place

Inakahama Beach, located in Nagata on Yakushima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture, is a coastline where travelers exploring the island’s natural landscapes often pause by the water’s edge. The beach is set against a dynamic backdrop where the mountains of the island’s northwest approach the sea closely, creating a naturally rich environment.

The shoreline curves gently, with a striking contrast between the blue sea and white sand. From the landward side, the prominent volcanic mountain, Furudake, can be seen rising distinctly. Visitors can walk on the sand while hearing the sound of the waves or observe the combined scenery of the ocean and the mountain.

This beach serves as an important nesting site for sea turtles that come ashore to lay their eggs from May to July during the quiet of night. Globally recognized for its significance as a nesting habitat, the beach maintains fine-grained sand that facilitates the turtles’ movements. The area features smooth white sand that is comfortable to walk on barefoot and offers panoramic views of Furudake volcano with the sea in the foreground.
