Kigen Sugi
About this place
Kigen Sugi is a giant cedar tree located deep within the forests of Onoma in Yakushima Town, Kumage District, Kagoshima Prefecture. It stands surrounded by cool, clear air and dappled sunlight filtering through the surrounding trees, and it has been watching over this land for many centuries.
The tree is estimated to be around 3,000 years old, and its appearance differs markedly from the other trees nearby. Its thick trunk is covered with moss and various plants that coexist on its surface, creating the impression of a small forest in itself.
A well-maintained walking path runs close to the tree, allowing visitors to approach it easily regardless of physical strength. The environment around Kigen Sugi is calm, providing a quiet space for observation. The tree’s appearance changes with the shifting light and time of day, offering different views from the forest trail.
Visitors interested in the natural history of Yakushima often pause here, spending some time quietly near the cedar.
