About this place

Road closedDue to Typhoon No. 24 (September 2026), the prefectural road to Shiratani Unsuikyo (including Taikoiwa Rock and the Mossy Forest) is closed for the time being, and the area cannot be entered. Please check the latest official information before you go. Yakushima Tourism Association notice (updated September 20, 2026)

Located deep within the mountains of Kusukawa in Yakushima Town, the Mossy Forest is illuminated by sunlight filtering through the trees. Upon entering, the air becomes cool and clear, and the ground is covered densely with fresh moss that envelops towering trees, countless rocks, and fallen logs, creating a continuous green landscape.

The forest presents a variety of scenes shaped by water and light, accompanied by the constant sounds of flowing water and bird calls. In the early morning, the area is shrouded in mist, creating a quiet, hazy view. After rain, the water droplets on the moss reflect light, enhancing the vividness of the colors. The forest offers opportunities to observe small details as well, such as moss spores and the shapes of tree roots.

Visitors move through the quiet forest at a leisurely pace, away from the noise of daily life, paying attention to the subtle presence of the forest around them. The walking path allows for slow exploration of the natural formations that have developed over many years.
