About this place

Nabegataki Falls is located in the mountainous area of Oguni Town in Kumamoto Prefecture. The site features a wide waterfall that spreads across the riverwidth, appearing like a curtain of water. Visitors enter the grounds and follow a path surrounded by trees, leading to the dynamic falls.

The approach to the waterfall involves a short hike through a leafy trail where sunlight filters through the canopy. As the path nears the falls, the sound of cascading water and the mist rising across the river provide a sense of the place’s scale. The surrounding trees and flowing water combine to create a changing landscape throughout the seasons.

In addition to the daytime view, there is illumination at night that highlights the water’s movement against the darkness. This lighting produces a different, more atmospheric scene compared to the one seen during the day.

The area allows for walking along a wooded trail to reach the wide waterfall up close and observing its unique shape. Both day visitors and those coming in the evening can experience the natural environment of Aso in distinct ways.
