Takachiho Gorge
About this place
Takachiho Gorge, located in Mukaiyama, Takachiho Town, Miyazaki Prefecture, is surrounded by steep basalt cliffs formed by ancient volcanic activity. The gorge features a calm, emerald-green water surface flowing between towering rock walls, accompanied by the gentle sound of water and fresh air.
A prominent feature of the gorge is a waterfall cascading dramatically from the high cliffs to the water below. Visitors can view this contrasting scenery of cliffs and waterfall from different perspectives. There is a well-maintained walking path that allows safe observation of the tall cliffs and waterfall from above. Alternatively, boat rentals provide closer views from the water, where the cliffs appear even higher and the mist from the waterfall can be felt.
The black basalt rock faces show varying colors throughout the seasons. Visitors can observe the natural formations changing with spring’s fresh greenery, the cool waters of summer, the autumn foliage, and the quiet atmosphere of winter. The area offers various seasonal expressions of its geological features.
