Tsugane-otoshi Falls
About this place
Tsugane-otoshi Falls is located in the snowy mountains of the Yukinoura area in Saikai City, Nagasaki Prefecture. The sound of flowing water gradually intensifies as visitors approach through dense greenery. The waterfall appears against steep rock faces, where powerful streams slide over the stone and fall into the pool below, reflecting dappled sunlight on the water’s surface.
The falls derive their name from an old story about freshwater crabs known as Tsugane, which once lived in the area and were said to have been swept away by the strong currents. Walking trails around the falls provide views that change with the seasons. In spring and summer, fresh green leaves surround the area and a cool atmosphere is created by the mist. Autumn brings vivid colors as the foliage contrasts with the rocky cliffs, while winter offers a quiet scene wrapped in clear, still air.
On weekends, visitors often come to enjoy the quiet daytime atmosphere. People spend their time cooling off near the waterfall’s basin, strolling along the paths while listening to bird songs and the sounds of the wind.
