About this place
Wilson’s Stump is located deep in the mountains of Miyanoura, Yakushima Town, Kagoshima Prefecture, surrounded by dense green forest. This area is home to ancient primeval forests unique to Yakushima, where various plant species grow abundantly. Maintained walking trails follow the natural terrain, allowing movement through the forest environment.
A notable feature of the site is a massive cedar stump covered in lush moss. Visitors can enter the hollow interior of the stump, which offers a quiet space separated from the outside. Looking upward from inside reveals a heart-shaped outline formed by the cut edges of the stump and patches of sunlight filtering through the canopy. This natural light display changes with the weather and time of day.
The surrounding trekking courses trace the rolling landscape and support observation of the local ecosystem. The moss-covered stump interior remains a quiet spot, and the trails are designed for ease of walking along natural contours. A variety of indigenous plants can be seen along the way. The path winds through thick woods where beams of sunlight penetrate the foliage, presenting a natural scene shaped by the forest itself.
